Gravity leading the way at this year’s BAFTA Film Nominations closely followed by 12 Year’s A Slave and American Hustle.

Bright and early this morning, home-grown talent Luke Evans and Helen McCrory took centre stage at BAFTA HQ to reveal the 2014 EE British Academy Film Nominations.  Across 24 categories, the nominations demonstrated the strength of British talent in an international industry. 6,500 BAFTA members (with the exception of the Rising Star Award, which is a public vote), offered up their choices in the first round of their votes.

This year’s frontrunner is Gravity (whose special effects were created in London’s Framestore), from Mexican director, Alfonso Cuarón’s, which has received a staggering 11 nominations. This included Best Film; Outstanding British Film; Best Director; Original Screenplay; Leading Actress (Sandra Bullock); Original Music; Cinematography; Editing; Production Design; Sound; and (unsurprisingly) Special Visual Effects.

This is closely followed by the unashamedly brutal depiction of the American slave trade in British director Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave, which ties with David O. Russell’s American Hustle both claiming 10 nominations each. McQueen also goes head to head with Russell in the battle for Best Director, which also includes; Paul Greengrass for Captain Phillips; Martin Scorsese for The Wolf Of Wall Street; and as previously mentioned Cuarón for Gravity.

Looking closer to home in the category for Outstanding British Film titles include biopic Mandela: The Long Walk To Freedom; Philomena from Stephen Frears; Rush, starring Chris Hemsworth; Disney’s Saving Mr. Banks, Clio Barnard’s The Selfish Giant; and Gravity.  Whilst Outstanding Debut By A British Writer, Director or Producer sees writer Kelly Marcel nodded for her script for Saving Mr. Banks; Scott Graham for Shell; Paul Wright and Polly Stokes For Those In Peril; Kieran Evans for Kelly + Victor and Colin Carberry and Glenn Patterson for Good Vibrations.

Leading Actor is a close run this year. Up for the award are Bruce Dern for his performance in Alexander Payne’s Nebraska; Chiwetel Ejiofor his role as Solomon Norhtup in 12 Years A Slave; Christian Bale, for his bold (and bald) portrayal of conman Irving Rosenfeld in American Hustle; Leonardo DiCaprio in Scorsese’s The Wolf Of Wall Street; and Tom Hanks as Captain Phillips.

Amy Adams (American Hustle), Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine), Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks), Dame Judi Dench (Philomena) and Sandra Bullock (Gravity) are all up for Leading Actress.

The EE British Academy Film Awards are truly celebrating a fantastic year of strong contenders, but it is important to note that many of the titles selected equally laud the merits and successes of the British Film industry. From directors (Steve McQueen, Paul Greengrass, Justin Chadwick, Stephen Frears to name a few), to writers, (Kelly Marcel, Scott Graham), actors and actresses (Emma Thompson, Steve Coogan, Judi Dench, Chiwetel Ejiofor), as well as Directors Of Photography and Editors (Joe Walker, Sean Bobbit) British talent stands out for its quality in a competitive international market. This sentiment was echoed by Director Of The BFI Film Fund, Ben Roberts, who stated, ““It’s really pleasing to see BAFTA spotlight a wide range of British films, from the VFX genius showcased so vividly in Gravity, the visceral and powerful storytelling in 12 Years a Slave, to the heart-wrenching humanity of films like The Selfish Giant and Philomena – in what’s been an outstanding year for British filmmaking, it’s just a shame not everyone can be nominated. The BAFTAs can provide a huge boost for new film talent and it’s fantastic to see bold new voices like Paul Wright and Scott Graham included in the Outstanding Debut category. I’m proud that the BFI Film Fund has supported a number of the nominated films, both features and shorts – it’s been a privilege to work with these prodigiously talented filmmakers, and I wish them and indeed all the nominees the very best of luck for the awards.”

Read The Full List of those selected can be seen below, and Good luck to all who are nominated!

The BAFTA’s will be broadcast on BBC 1 for the main event, with red carpet on BBC3 beforehand, on Sunday February 16.
